Stream of Time

The Stream of Time keeps flowing.
It has a way of surprising you,
even when,
perhaps,
especially when,
an event or landmark is anticipated.
You see it coming in the distance,
and note how long until it arrives.
Yet,
when you aren't paying attention,
it moves closer,
and soon,
you realize,
you have reached the landmark.
You may celebrate its arrival,
observe its passing,
sigh with relief or longing as it departs.
But,
despite the attention,
unbidden,
it slips by,
fading into the mists.
Soon,
the details will fade,
and the only memory retained,
will be the general shape,
the emotional weight,
and even that wears away,
under the constant,
inexorable,
Stream of Time.
